Cat Toilet Training

cat toilet training system

Who doesn’t like the idea of not having to clean the kitty litter tray again and scoop out your cat’s bits every morning? I’m sure that there are many more people like me out there that are looking for an alternative and would be more than happy for our cats to use the ordinary toilet just like us humans do.

I’ve seen many videos and attempts to train a cat to use the toilet and I’m going to be sharing with you my experiences with the Litter Kwitter. I bought this cat toilet training system in a local store based on the fact that it was advertised on TV before. I just hope that their marketing is just as good as their product.

The Challenge: Train my 5 month old Ragdoll to use the toilet instead of his litter tray in only 8 weeks.

Preparation

  • I’m unpacking the box and reading the instructions which seem to be quite straight forward. The cat should be at least 3 months old, litter trained and patience is required. (3 ticks for meeting all the requirements)
  • Remove all other litter trays in the house and ensure you keep the litter system squeaky clean. (If used, clean with non ammonia cleaners.)

Step 1 – week 1 – day 1

Choose the first and biggest tray (red), fill it with 4-5 cups of litter and place it next to the toilet.  Show your cat  the new litter tray by putting him/her on top of it. Ensure that you give him access to this room at all times. Keep the tray clean and monitor progress and ensure use for 2-3 days.

Tip: Keep monitoring your cat and keep showing him/her the way to the toilet especially when it starts scratching on the floor near the old spot. I was very lucky and we didn’t have any accidents during this first phase.

Step 2 – week 1 – day 4

Now that your cat is familiar with the new environment and location of the litter tray, lift the device onto the toilet bowl and secure it (my particular device fits a standard toilet and has clips). The tray must be stable, otherwise your cat won’t feel confident using it. Introduce the new position to your cat, put your cat onto the tray or encourage to jump up by itself. Give your cat at least a week to get used to this new arrangement before moving to the next stage.
