Pedigree Cats

Pedigree Cats vs Non-Pedigree Cats – what is the difference?

The term pedigree originates from a French phrase which stands for the shape of family trees. Pedigree cats are defined as having registered parents, grandparents through a number of generations and are of the same breed. To be classified as a pedigree cat breeder the cat must be registered with the appropriate governing body.

The origin of pedigree cats is different for each breed. Some cat breeds are a result of manmade mutation whereas others pedigree are found in nature.

Non-pedigree cats are defined as not being a pure breed, or in other words a mixture of non recognised breeds. Around the world this blended breed of cat is often known as moby’s (UK) or alley cats (USA) or Moggy’s in Australia. Non-Pedigree cats are inherently robust, hardy and more resistant to disease due to there mixed genetics.

Non-pedigree cats can be classified into two further categories, short and long-hair cats. Of those, the majority are shorthaired due the short-hair gene being dominant in cats. Consequently, these cats inherit the strongest genes by natural selection and are therefore considered smart and robust. Crossbreed cats differ much less, except from colour and coat, from one another and there is no set standard for these types of cats compared to pedigree breeds.

People will often select a pedigree cat because they admire particular characteristics of a certain breed, like the Ragdoll which exhibits a wonderful nature and a stunning coat for example. Pure bred cats also tend to look more striking or exotic than their mixed bred cousins which are appealing reasons for many. Pedigree kittens sourced from a reputable breeder will also provide a piece of mind to the buyer as reputable breeders will always ensure their kittens have full vet checks and the appropriate age dependent inoculations.

A common myth, still lingering in people’s mind, is that pedigree cats are less healthy than mixed breeds because of inbreeding methods. You’ll be surprised to know that not all pedigree cats are excessively inbred and professional breeders have a careful selection process for their breeding cats, some even genetically testing their breeding cats to ensure the reduced occurrence of health issues and to eliminate negative characteristics that some breeds display as they develop.
